1. Check Your Diet. If you are forced to stay home more than you used to, it’s easy to throw your more structured diet plan out the window. You know what you are supposed to eat, but often it’s hard to stick to a plan.
2. Get fit. Stay fit. Don’t make it just like the “Freshman 15.” The existence of Covid-19 doesn’t have to include 19 extra pounds for you. Do something about it!
3. Track Your Activity to Help You Meet Your Goal. Some people use the “walk 10,000 steps a day” guideline to get them going. An easy way to calculate your steps is to download a fitness tracker app on your smartphone.
4. Go Online for Fitness. Get back to your gym if you feel comfortable. If your gym is closed or you would feel less stressed working out from home, go online for classes or programs to get your heart rate up and build muscle mass.
5. Look for Free Classes. Check your local Y for free classes or go to the national YMCA website. Choose from yoga, Pilates, weightlifting, tai chi, and a variety of active older adult classes.

1. Do Not Act Your Age. Do not act your age or at least what you think your current age should act like. What was your best year so far? 28? 40? Now? Picture yourself at that age and be it.
2. Be Positive. Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive.
3. Ditch the Negativity. Have negative friends who complain all of the time and constantly talk about how awful everything is? Drop them. As cruel as that may sound, distance yourself from people who do not have a positive outlook on life.
4. Walk Tall. Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Come on. You can probably do it. Analyze your gait. Do you walk slowly because you have just become lazy or, perhaps, have a fear of falling?
5. Stand Tall. Stand up straight! You can knock off the appearance of a few extra years with this trick your mother kept trying to tell you. Look at yourself in the mirror.
6. How Are Your Pearly Whites? How’s your smile? Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Your teeth are just as important to your good health as the rest of your body.
7. Lonely? Stop brooding and complaining about having no friends or family. Do something about it now. Right this minute. Pick up the phone, landline, or cell and make a call to do one or more of the following: Volunteer your time, Take a class, Invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee.
8. Walk 10,000 Steps A Day. Start walking not only for your health but to see the neighbors. Have a dog? You’ll be amazed how the dog can be a conversation starter.
9. Get Those Annual Check-Ups. Make this month the time to set up your annual physical and other health screenings. Go to the appointments and then, hopefully, you can stop worrying about ailments for a while.
10. Find your inner artist. Who says taking music lessons is for young school children? You may have an artist lurking inside you just waiting to be tapped.

September is Healthy Aging Month: 7 Steps to Aging Healthy

7 hours ago Commhealthcare.com Show details

Estimated Reading Time: 5 mins
1. Take the time to get your eyes checked. Slight changes in vision can be normal as time goes on, but a marked or sudden decrease may not be. Because vision is such a vital part of daily life, it is important to maintain regular check-ups with your physician and discuss any concerns with them as well.
2. Hearing. Age-related hearing loss is most commonly caused by changes to the inner ear, although certain medications and prolonged exposure to noises that are too loud can also play a role.
3. Blood Pressure Screening. Check with your physician every year for abnormal blood pressure. A normal reading of blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg, although the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 29% of Americans suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure, and that this condition costs the nation $46 billion per year (2)!
4. Meeting with family. There are plenty of new things to appreciate as you get older and spending time with a growing family is one of them. Allocate a bit of time each week for social activities with family, as this makes for priceless memories and carefree laughter.
5. Volunteer. Volunteering is worthwhile way to spend time because it gives the person a feeling of accomplishment and is also a perfect way to give back to the community.
6. Practice something challenging. Learning a new language or playing a challenging puzzle game, like Sudoku, is a great way to keep the brain sharp. In addition, a study called the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) discovered that a series of specific “brain exercises” were found to improve cognitive function in its 2,832 elderly participants.
7. Keep your body moving. Whether this is taking a long walk at the end of the day or spurts of short activity spread throughout the day, physical activity is important in preventing certain health conditions and strengthening the body.

Celebrate Healthy Aging Month: 10 Healthy Lifestyle Tips

1. Focus on What is Important to You. Who or what makes your life meaningful? What kind of person do you want to be? Why is your health important to you? These questions can guide us to what is most important in our lives and where we want to focus our energy.
2. Exercise. Staying active is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As we age, exercise helps our health, balance, mobility and more. Exercise can be adjusted to fit a variety of ability levels.
3. Eat Healthy. Healthy foods can be a powerful medicine. That’s why it’s important to have a well balanced diet and practice healthy habits. Try eating immune-boosting foods such as red bell peppers, broccoli and spinach.
4. Attend Routine Doctor Appointments. It’s important to stay on top of your health — that is why you should never neglect routine check ups. At Iora, our healthcare team works to support your whole health.
5. Be Creative. There is a large body of research that links creativity with healthy aging. Start journaling or doodling for 10-minutes each day, attend an art class, cook, listen to music, or tend to a garden.
6. Socialize with Others. Regardless of where you are, it’s important to keep in touch with family and friends. Some ways you can stay connected are by chatting with loved ones via video chat, staying connected on social media, or even by sending an old-fashioned letter.
7. Practice Mindfulness Meditation. Mindfulness meditation has been found to be beneficial for both physical and mental health. Set aside several minutes each day and focus on your breathing.
8. Get a Good Night’s Sleep. Sleep hygiene is an integral part of our overall health and well-being; however, our sleep patterns change as we age . A good night’s sleep relies on a consistent wake up time and a consistent bedtime routine to help you wind down.
9. Reduce Your Stress. Finding ways to reduce your stress can benefit your health. According to the American Institute of Stress, chronic stress is widely believed to accelerate aging.
10. Find a Hobby. Just like any muscle, the brain needs its exercise. One way you can keep your mind active is by trying out a new hobby. It’s never too late to try something new.

1. Socialize. There is a growing body of evidence that shows a correlation between positive social connections and longevity. So, during Healthy Aging Month, make it a point to engage with positive people who support you and push you to try new things.
2. Don’t act your age. It’s never a good idea to act based on how other people your age behave. Think about your favorite age. Were you 25? 45? 65? Imagine yourself then and do what you did then.
3. Be positive. When you talk to other people (and even in your mind to yourself), practice being positive. If you notice yourself complaining, try to think of something positive instead.
4. Walk confidently. Even if you are the least confident person in the world, no one will know if you don’t show it. Healthy Aging Month is just as much about improving emotional wellness, and one way to do that is walking like someone with confidence.
5. Smile. There is a strong correlation between happiness and the number of times you smile. But if you feel self-conscious about your smile, why not do what you can to improve your wellbeing?
6. Be proactive about your health. In addition to catching up on your dental appointments, consider scheduling your yearly physical, or see a specialist to take care of that problem you’ve been ignoring.
7. Try a new hobby. Is there a particular activity you’ve always wanted to try, but never had time to practice before retirement? Why not make a promise to yourself to try it during Healthy Aging Month?
8. Take naps. Naps aren’t only for young children; they’re for everyone! For older adults, in particular, naps can boost alertness and energy, which helps with cognition and focus.
9. Get moving. Regular exercise is the foundation of healthy aging. Seniors should try to get two and a half hours of physical activity every week. It doesn’t have to be a full-blown workout, either.
10. Make realistic plans for yourself. Studies show that Alzheimer’s is less likely to develop in older adults who have a sense of purpose. However, finding this can be challenging.
