10 Kids Books that Teach Nutrition Super Healthy Kids

8 hours ago Superhealthykids.com Show details

1. N is for Nutrition – This is a brand new book, and I couldn’t love it more! Every letter of the alphabet is followed by a food or nutrient that kids can include in their diet.
2. We Are What We Eat– by Kristy Hammil- This book uses talking and rhyming food characters to teach healthy concepts. According to the description, “Your kids will start to recognize the difference between foods that are nourishing to their bodies and foods that aren’t.
3. Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk food- There are so many gems for teaching kids in the Berenstain Series, including, Too Much TV, Manners, Kindness, and more.
4. Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert- This is more of a picture book, but kids enjoy reading and seeing all the foods that are associated with each letter.
5. The Fruits We Eat by Gail Gibbons- I was drawn to this book for the simple connection I had with Gail who writes: Whether fresh, cooked, dried, canned, or frozen…fruits are delicious and nutritious!
6. Nutrition Fun with Brocc and Roll by 24 Carrot Press. This is more of an activity book than a story book, but presented in such a fun way, I had to share.
7. Gregory the Terrible Eater– I’ve owned this book for as long as I’ve been teaching nutrition to children! (post here about teaching with it) I’ve read it in more pre-schools and elementary classes than I can count.
8. Flint the Dragon Learns to Fly by Kendra Parks – this is a new book that teaches healthy eating through a dragon named Flint! Flint learns to fly being powered by a Green smoothie!
9. The Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons- Similar to her book, The Fruits We Eat, this book describes, explains, and features Veggies. Gail explores vegetables from the parts of the plant to veggies we see on the table and all the varieties available today.
10. Good Enough to Eat by Lizzy Rockwell. This book might be a little out of date (giving nutrition advice that has been changed since 2009), but the general ideas can still be appreciated.

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. Rah, Rah, Radishes: A Vegetable Chant by April Pulley Sayre. This photographic celebration of vegetables shows them at their very best. It’s one of our favorite catchy (not teach-y) nutrition books to share with little kids to kick off a healthy eating or plant unit.
2. Summer Supper by Rubin Pfeffer. This alliterative story tells the field-to-table tale of a healthy, seasonal meal. It’s great for getting kids thinking about where their food comes from and talking about their own family food traditions.
3. Maurice the Unbeastly by Amy Dixon. Maurice may be an unusually gentle monster, but he’s determined to be himself. That includes steadfastly preferring green veggies to traditional monster fare.
4. Gregory, the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat. Gregory loves fruits, vegetables, eggs, and fish, rather than the typical goat fare of tires, cans, and t-shirts.
5. I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato (Charlie and Lola) by Lauren Child. Lola won’t eat healthy foods until her brother creatively renames them, calling carrots “Orange Twiglets from Jupiter,” and mashed potatoes “Pointy Peaks of Mount Fuji.”
6. How Did That Get In My Lunchbox? : The Story of Food by Chris Butterworth. A big part of making healthy food choices is understanding where food comes from.
7. Tyler Makes Spaghetti by Tyler Florence. A little boy who loves spaghetti gets to spend the day making fresh pasta, sauce, and meatballs with a local chef.
8. The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman. Kids love this hilarious tale that gently pokes fun at picky eaters. Are the seven Peters siblings healthy eaters?
9. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. Here’s the classic children’s story about overcoming food objections. Like strong-minded children everywhere, it takes a great deal of convincing for Sam to try a new dish.
10. To Market, To Market by Nikki McClure. Nutritious food begins with nutritious ingredients. This timeless book captures the habits of healthy food shopping so beautifully.
